Boundaries and Balance

Making Marriages Work. Part 3

The importance of balance and boundaries in a marriage cannot be overstated.

I have said time and time again, everything in life is about balance!! The better balance you have, the better boundaries you will have, and the happier in life you will be!

In any relationship, it is important for both partners to have a sense of autonomy and individuality, while also working together as a team. Setting clear boundaries and finding a healthy balance between individual needs and the needs of the relationship can help to promote a strong and healthy partnership.

According to a recent study by Hill and colleagues (2017), couples who reported higher levels of individual autonomy and boundary setting, had higher levels of relationship satisfaction and lower levels of conflict. The researchers found that couples who were able to maintain a balance between independence and interdependence, reported higher levels of marital quality.

In addition to promoting relationship satisfaction, setting boundaries can also help to prevent resentment and burnout. When one partner feels like they are always giving and not receiving in return, it can lead to feelings of frustration and resentment. By setting clear boundaries and communicating their needs effectively, both partners can work together to create a more balanced and fulfilling relationship.

Another key component of a healthy and balanced marriage involves each partner giving and receiving support and attention in equal measure. This can mean sharing responsibilities, dividing household chores, and actively working to meet each other's emotional and physical needs. When both partners contribute equally to the relationship, it creates a sense of mutual respect and understanding that strengthens the bond between them (and doesn’t this just sound like the generosity and kindness components we just talked about).

As I said before, on the farm, you reap what you sow. The more we invest in each other inside the relationship and marriage, the stronger the relationship and marriage will be, and the higher chances we have for success.
